The Asphalt Advantage
Here in Wisconsin, you might argue that there are only two seasons: winter and summer. One day it is 80 degrees, and then it feels like the next day you wake up to snow that won’t disappear for 6 months. Living in an area with such extreme weather can make being a homeowner a bit difficult, especially when it comes to your driveway. Unless you are sticking with gravel, your choice for driveways is either concrete or asphalt. This climate you live in should be one of the biggest factors in deciding which kind of driveway is right for you. Concrete driveways do not handle cold weather well at all. The snow and ice can cause them to crack and become uneven, and all this can happen after only one winter! Asphalt does great in cold weather, is cheaper to initially install and as long as you seal it every 3-5 years, you should not have any problems in the heat. Asphalt driveways are also much easier to repair than concrete driveways. If you develop cracks in an asphalt driveway, all you have to do is fill the cracks or holes and reseal. If this happens with concrete, you will have to patch an entire section, which can be difficult and expensive. You’ll still want to follow the simple rules of making sure to keep as much snow and ice off your driveway as possible, but the damage won’t be nearly as severe with asphalt as it is with concrete.
